Long before Rockingham County was established, the Shenandoah Valley was home to Native American tribes including the Iroquois, Siouan, Shawnee, and Tuscarora. Over time, they created a well-worn path through the valley that later became the Great Wagon Road, now known as Route 11.
This route guided settlers south from Pennsylvania, opening the door to new opportunities in the valley. Drawn by fertile land and abundant natural resources, German and Scots-Irish settlers built farms, mills, and close-knit communities that laid the foundation for the county’s future.
The Heart of Frontier Living
Life on the frontier was centered on faith, family, and agriculture. Influenced by Quaker, Mennonite, and Brethren traditions, early residents built a culture grounded in strong values and hard work.
Their efforts helped the Shenandoah Valley become highly productive, eventually earning recognition as a vital agricultural region. Music, craftsmanship, and a spirit of cooperation also became lasting hallmarks of the community.
A Region Shaped by Conflict and Resilience
Rockingham County played a significant role during the Civil War due to its strategic location. The area saw military campaigns led by figures such as General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, while local farms supplied essential resources.
The war brought hardship, including the destruction of barns and farmland during Union General Philip Sheridan’s campaign. Even so, residents demonstrated resilience, rebuilding their livelihoods and restoring the land in the years that followed.

Today, Rockingham County is a thriving and diverse community rooted in its agricultural heritage while embracing growth in education, manufacturing, and technology. Home to over 81,000 residents, the county continues to balance economic development with the preservation of its natural beauty and way of life.
