4. Melrose Caverns

Rockingham County's history extends beneath the surface at Melrose Caverns, where underground formations and Civil War history come together. The caverns played a role during the 1862 Valley Campaign, when soldiers used the caves to their advantage. Today, guided tours introduce visitors to the caverns' geological features and historical connections while sharing stories about the property, which has remained in the same family since it was granted in 1741. With a history spanning generations and a setting unlike anything above ground, Melrose Caverns offers a distinctive way to learn more about the Shenandoah Valley's past.
